Camp Taiwan - Summer Camp in Taiwan

Summer 2011 is off to a great start. Excellent weather, happy kids and attentive counselors have made this one of the best opening weeks ever. Camp Taiwan’s 2011 Winter Camp is in the books and all agree it was a resounding success! Camp was full of children all winter as Harry Potter campers became witches and wizards wandering the halls of Hogwarts and Robin Hood campers transformed into medieval knights and maidens building large catapults to protect Lockesly Castle. When all was said and done nothing could stop the winter campers from having a good time. Rain or shine, activities proceeded normally and the kids proved our motto: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.”

Warmly bundled campers played on the giant swing, zip line, climbing wall, low ropes course, and more. Indoor activities included a variety of science and engineering projects that left kids and counselors alike engaged and excited.

Camp Taiwan has already turned its attention to a new, bigger 2011 Summer Camp. Check back soon for dates and themes for summer 2011.

Our first session of Winter Camp 2011 begins on Friday and preparations are nearly complete. Camp Taiwan is excited to welcome more than 100 children this winter for fun, activity-based learning in Wanli. There are still some spots available for later sessions. Camp Taiwan will put its new 110mm telescope to good use with star (planet) gazing outings during 2011 Winter Camp. Campers for both themes, Robin Hood and Harry Potter, will have the opportunity to use the scope and learn about constellations and planets.

This is a great chance for city kids to take advantage of the lack of street lights and get up close and personal with Jupiter and the Galilean moons with the Camp telescope. Jupiter should be visible, weather permitting, in the early evening before it heads below the horizon and gives way to our own moon. Students should be able to see the red bands on Jupiter and chart the movement of Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto.

Campers will learn how to position the telescope and use compass points to search for objects in the night sky. Basic astronomy lessons they have learned throughout the school year will be made clear in a way not possible in the classroom. Don’t let your kids miss this chance at becoming a junior astronomer. The new Eco Lodge in upper camp provides the perfect setting for our 2011 Winter Camp. Our 3D/2N camps are based in the lodge and focus on critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is the perfect opportunity for kids to take a break from the classroom, but not a break from learning. At Winter Camp, kids get to put what they’ve learned in school to work for them and start innovating and exploring new concepts.

The two alternating themes for the Winter Camp are Harry Potter: The Science Behind the Magic and The Age of Robin Hood: Medieval Machines. Both camps feature large hands-on projects that will have kids talking about their camp experience all spring. Learn more about Winter Camp 2011 and act soon, space in the Eco Lodge is limited.

Camp Taiwan was proud to host the 2010 Rockland Day in November. This two day, one night event for Rockland staff and customers was great fun. Activities included archery, giant swing, low ropes, arts and crafts, zip line, ecology and more! Check out the Rockland blog to see more stories and pictures from this event.
